Five Favorites (Vol. 1)

Welcome to another attempt at my return to blogging! Today I am joining Hallie et al for Five Favorites - make sure you click the link and enjoy the positivity!

1. Naptime

Please note the Winnie-the-Pooh blanket that I am forcing my poor baby to bond with

Naptime is always a complete hit or miss with Leo. Some days he sleeps like an absolute champ and I don't even know what to do with all the time that I have on my hands! Well, ok, I know what to do with the time on my hands but choose to ignore it and lounge around the apartment indulging in sheer laziness. It is superb. Yesterday was a "I Will Only Nap in Mommy's Arms" kind of day. Today is a "I Will Nap Long Enough for Mommy to Go to Kohl's, Return, Drink Coffee, and Blog" kind of day.

2. Kohl's

....should read "expect moderately good things"

I never get good deals at Kohl's. Maybe I'm the wrong size or just too picky but there it is. This is a different story for baby clothing, however, and thanks to a few gift cards I was able to pick up some last minute clothing for kiddo before our epic trip to Virginia!

3. House Hunting

What is this, a house for ants?!?!

I don't know if this is actually a "favorite" thing. Perhaps "necessary evil" would be a better label. Either way, tomorrow afternoon we are going to be packing up and hitting the road to go house hunting in Virginia. The trip will be divided into two portions (because we are not entirely insane) and will include a night with my family on the way there and and on our way back. This will be my first time really seeing Front Royal and the Shenandoah Valley so I am looking forward to it and getting a chance to see (hopefully) what our future home will look like. The hours in the car..... not so much.

4. Disposable Diapers

About what we go through on a daily basis. Give or a take.
I am so grateful for disposable diapers! I have heard all of the wonderful arguments for cloth diapers and know people who do it, but with the blow-outs that this child has been having lately there is something wonderfully cathartic about throwing those things into the trash! That being said, I find myself wondering if we are just buying the wrong brand. Is there a brand out there that can withstand epic poops? I mean, actually contain them? If there is please leave a comment below to let me know what it is and where I can buy it!

5. Leo's Smiles

"Mommy thinks she's going to sleep tonight"
Sadly this is the only photo I personally have of Leo smiling and it is a little outdated. Kiddo has now reached the point where he smiles while awake and, what is way better, in response to Ben and me! I don't know if there is anything better than when your own child smiles at you. The worst night or day imaginable can be transformed in a millisecond by those smiles and I cherish each and every one of them!

  1. Ok you're going to hate me, but the only brand that withstands epic blowouts?

    Cloth diapers.

    :P

Not worth it until you move probably, but brands with gussets (Thirsties & rumparooz are my favorite covers for the blowout stage) keep it ALL in. And you just toss it in the wetbag and empty that into the washer - no rinsing, soaking, nothing!

It's not for everyone, but we've saved THOUSANDS of dollars by buying cloth, and I can count on one hand the number of times we've had a poop leak (in those covers - there are def. some that don't hold it in!) over the course of all 4 children.

    Good luck house hunting!!!

  2. "How can you teach kids to read when they can't even fit inside the building?" Have fun on the house-hunt!

I never find clothes at Kohls either, but def. find kids clothing and house-ware paraphernalia.

    Such a cute little guy!

  3. Luvs is the only brand that very rarely leaks for us. I have three children and can probably count on one hand all the leaks we've had with Luvs. We've tried Pampers and Huggies and had horrible leaks. My husband won't let me buy any brand but Luvs!

  4. So.... yeah.... to copy what Rosie said up there, the _only_ brand of diapers to stand up to blow-out proportion poo's.... Cloth. Cloth Diapers hold up to the blow-out test. It's true.

I didn't switch to cloth until our 4th was 15 months old and #5 was due in a few months. Switching a potty-training toddler wasn't too bad, it was easy even. And our fifth was never in anything but cloth from the get-go, as #6 will be when he/she makes their appearance next month.

I've had, maybe, a couple blow outs with my babies in cloth, but normally due to adult error not too much poo. Go cloth, it's awsome. :)

  5. I had the same thought as Rosie-we have way fewer leaks with cloth..

  6. I hate to ruin your day... but I'm going to have to agree with everyone that you get fewer blowouts with cloth. The weak "elastic" around the legs of disposables just can't hold up against REAL elastic on cloth. And when it comes to the back, forget it. 'Sposies don't even try to hold back the tide.

Having said that, I have always had reasonably good luck with Walmart brand. It's been so long since I've tried others brands, but I want to think I also liked Luvs. I think a lot depends on your baby's shape. Fat legs, long torsos, and scrawny chickens can each require a different fit, so you may just have to experiment.

Another option is to use disposables but get a few cloth covers to put over top as backup. This would work especially well for babies who have a predictable poop schedule. My Rocco would, guaranteed, poop as SOON as he woke up in the morning. Because his diaper was already full from the night, he would leak practically every morning. I almost rethought the whole co-sleeping thing...

These Kawaii covers work quite well for the price. I have two and used them regularly. http://www.sweetbottomsbaby.com/Kawaii-Diapers-One-Size-Diaper-Covers_p_97.html

  7. I'm just excited to finally meet you one of these days - we just made our *somewhat less epic* move to Front Royal this past weekend, and I'm currently procrastinating unpacking all our unnecessary junk by catching up on your blog. Much better option ; )
Be forewarned - it's been hot as blazes here this week, but I'm hoping it's a fluke and that the weather will cool down for y'all this weekend. It feels like July (NOT my favorite VA weather), but if you like hot and humid, be my guest.

  8. I am not a cloth diaper user or evangelist. For little babies, pampers swaddlers are the best -- we had very few blowouts with them. Now that kiddo is older (16 months), I like the cheaper Huggies but have been buying Target brand to save money. Kiddo mostly stopped having poop blowouts when he started solids.

  9. My sister swears by cloth also, but I never used it. I think it really has to do with fit. All my boys were long and lean in the torso and the ONLY brand that helped with the blowouts and the leaks was Pampers. Luvs, Huggies and Costco brand never fit right. My friend swears by Target brand for the same reason for her babies. Also, with boys, I always found that when they get to the upper limits for weight in any size, it was always better to move up to the next size. The recommended weights always overlap and the bigger size always fit better and contained everything.

    1. We don't have an official closing date set yet but we've already made it past the inspection portion of the purchase so it should just be a matter of time :)

    2. That's great! Do you remember where it is? And let me know when you have a moving date, as I can help arrange for people to help unload/bring meals, etc. - our friends were God-sends during our move! beth dot fettes at gmail dot com
